How to Quarantine in Paradise

Step one: be rich, be very rich, be shamelessly rich.

In the past five months our familiar and, let’s face it, comfortable world of non-stop social interactions, constant movement from place to place, and cramming events into our busy schedules came to a screeching halt completely shutting down our average lifestyle: jobs, travel, person to person interactions, and day to day choices. All of us have suffered from this unfair change, whether it be economically, physically, or mentally. But, if you have money, lots of money, mid-Covid-19 life could treat you a little more fairly, actually a lot more fairly. Yes, you can still live in paradise.

If you are a billionaire, you don’t have to deal with government restrictions or even exposure to the virus. You can book your quarantine on a Covid-free isolated island or oasis of paradise in the Bahama’s, Fiji islands, Thailand, and the Maldives or in secluded luxury playgrounds of the rich in this country, such as in Teton, Wyoming.

Step two: Purchase a private yacht, or private jet to bypass the border restrictions, to arrive at your private paradise.

With today’s circumstances, our travel industry is transforming back to its original role of servicing only the rich and privileged. This was not a choice of the travel industry, but rather it was a result of Covid-19’s havoc on society. The poor and the middle class became poorer, while the rich became richer. According to PolyMatter’s Youtube video, “Where Billionaire’s Hide from the Coronavirus”, while 50.2 million Americans applied for unemployment benefits to feed their families, billionaire’s wealth and fortunes exploded by almost 20%. So, while average Americans vacationed in their living rooms, billionaires were busy yachting or jetting to their exotic vacation sites.

Countries that rely on tourism for a majority of their income, like Fiji and the Maldives had to find a way to balance their economy and safety. In order to accomplish both goals, these countries only welcomed travelers arriving in private yachts or on private jets, which happened to be the least amount of people who brought in the most amount of money. PolyMatter documents that, in Fiji, cruises brings in a total of $44 million per year with being exposed to 239,000 visitors. On the other hand, yachts bring in a total of $28 million per year and only 4,473 visitors. Yachts bring in only 2% of the infections and 63% of the island’s income. It makes sense for theses exotic islands to go for “the biggest bang for their buck”.

Step three: Be healthy and travel in small groups

There are no economy packages for the those exotic islands and luxury oases; however, if you remain mask and healthy and if you squirrel away enough cash for a week’s vacation, and lets face we all need it now, you might try a neighboring state with the same Covid-19 numbers or, less frequented beach sites, or remote frontier lakes and share your vacation with the local wildlife, or simply invest in a family pool, or an 8-person, three room tent for the backyard.
